Share Your Peel Memorial Story: Be Part of the Legacy
We know the walls of Peel Memorial hold countless stories of compassion, resilience, and connection. Now, we want to hear yours.
The Brampton-Bramalea Lions Club has a long history of stepping up when it matters most. Known for their commitment to giving back, the Club has supported William Osler Health System's (Osler) hospitals for decades—and recently made one of the most significant gifts in their history in support of the new Peel Memorial Hospital.
Back in 2021, the Lions announced they would match donations up to $1.5 million to Osler Foundation’s Build Back Together campaign to help our hospitals recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. It was a powerful gesture—and it was just the beginning.
During the pandemic, their longtime meeting space, which had been built in the ’60s through a $1-a-brick campaign, was sitting mostly empty. When an offer came in to purchase the property, the Lions saw an opportunity to do even more for the people of Peel Region.
“We received an offer for $3.5 million,” says Dan Greyerbiehl, the Club’s Vice-President of Finance. “And our mandate as Lions is to give the money back to the population.”
And that’s exactly what they did.
Dan, who’s been part of the Lions for over 40 years, was at Brampton Civic Hospital when he had the idea to direct some of that funding to support Peel Memorial. The Club’s latest $500,000 gift brings their total contribution to a remarkable $2 million—an investment in health care that will make a lasting impact on families across our city.
Today, Peel Memorial is being transformed into Brampton’s second hospital. And gifts like this are helping to make it happen.
The Lions’ commitment extends well beyond health care—they also support local food banks, Air Cadets, and Special Olympics events, just to name a few. But as the funds from the clubhouse sale are put to work in the community, Dan is thinking about what’s next. Membership has dropped over the years, and he hopes more people—especially those with a bit more time and a heart for giving back—will consider getting involved.
“Community involvement is what makes a community.”
We couldn’t agree more.
With 100 per cent of medical equipment and a portion of hospital construction funded by the community, gifts like this are essential. Peel Memorial was built by this community—and now, we’re calling on the community to help shape its future.
