Share Your Peel Memorial Story: Be Part of the Legacy
We know the walls of Peel Memorial hold countless stories of compassion, resilience, and connection. Now, we want to hear yours.
For Ravinder (Ravi) Purewal, joining William Osler Health System's (Osler) nursing team was more than a career move—it was a full circle moment. As a teenager, she volunteered in the paediatrics department at Peel Memorial, driven by a passion for working with children. At just 15 years old, she told the volunteer recruiter, "I really love working with kids. That's where my heart is."
Ravi began volunteering in 1997, offering small comforts to families facing unimaginable challenges. Whether delivering a warm beverage to a parent or playing with their child so they could step away for a moment, she witnessed firsthand the power of compassionate care.
"My experiences at Peel Memorial shaped me. I knew this was where I belonged," Ravi recalls. "The paediatrics department was warm, inviting—and the nurses amazed me. Their dedication, their skill—it inspired me."
Today, Ravi serves as that same source of inspiration as Clinical Services Manager, NICU & Paediatrics, at Brampton Civic Hospital. After launching her career at a Toronto hospital in 2004, she felt a strong pull back to her roots.
"There is something special about Osler," says Ravi, who lives in Etobicoke. "I knew I had to give back to my community. This is home." She joined Osler in 2008.
That's when everything came full circle. At 15, I told myself I'd be back here one day, working at my community hospital and making a difference for the children in our care—and now, here I am."
As a mother of five, Ravi understands the deep emotions parents face in the NICU and paediatrics. "I have the perspective of being a parent, too. The dedication and expertise of our nurses and physicians impact the entire family—the mom, the dad, the siblings, and of course, the little patient."
Her connection to Osler runs even deeper—three of her children were born at Brampton Civic. She dreams of another full-circle moment in the future—one of her children following in her footsteps.
"My girls always talk about working with me one day," she says with a smile. "One wants to be a physician, and my twins joke that I'll be their boss someday."
Ravi instills in them the same lesson that fuels her every day—giving back creates true happiness.
"That's why I come back every day—because I know I've done something good," she says.
She's also profoundly grateful for the donor who make that good work possible.
"Every piece of equipment we use is funded by our community," she emphasizes. "And in the neonatal and paediatric world, that equipment is essential. It's costly, but it's critical for our smallest, most vulnerable patients. Thanks to our donors, we can give these little ones the very best care."
